Les 13 Cicatrices 9:36 Stephane Trepp: trombone Michel Blanc: drums Franck Vigroux: guitars guest: Cecile Rives: voices Voice on 5.: Valerie Renaud I’m not familiar with this (presumably French) trio, so I can’t say this platter is typical of what they do/are capable of. Here, they concentrate on an amalgam of thorny, edgy European-style jazz/rock fusion (think Terje Rypdal, Raoul Bjorkheim) and the kind of squiggle/splatter semi-free jazz (now) typical of the NYC Tonic and Knitting Factory scene. It’s VERY well played - trombonist Stephane Trepp has a great round, singing tone, M. Blanc is a fine Bill Bruford-ish drummer and Franck Vigroux coaxes a wide range of noise out of his axes (I hear well-digested influences of Sonny Sharrock and Atilla Zoller, w/ touches of Jimi Hendrix) - but at risk of coming off as Mr. Jaded, this kind of stuff is starting to sound kinda same-y to me. I mean, as a fan of Curlew, John Zorn and Dave Douglas’ Tiny Bell Trio, I’m feelin’ déjU vu all over again. Not to damn this disc w/ faint praise, but neophytes to the interface betwixt free jazz and non-commercial fusion would probably get the most out of this album. - Mark Keresman, jazzreview.com
